What Is a Bernedoodle?

The Bernedoodle is a companion dog, through and through. This designer breed is a cross between the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Poodle, combining the intelligence of the Poodle with the charming, goofy, happy-go-lucky temperament of the Bernese. Bernedoodles are happiest when they’re spending time with their families—children included—and are willing participants in playtime and cuddle fests alike.

The breed itself is relatively new, first intentionally developed in the early 2000s to create a loyal, family-focused companion dog.

Bernedoodle Temperament & Personality

Bernedoodles are known for their affectionate, social, and playful nature. They tend to form strong bonds with their people and thrive in homes where they can be part of everyday life.

★ Friendly and people-oriented

★ Gentle with children

★ Intelligent and eager to learn

★ Playful with a slightly goofy personality

Because they inherit traits from both parent breeds, personalities can vary. Some lean more toward the calm, loyal nature of the Bernese, while others take on the energetic, highly intelligent traits of the Poodle.

Important Note on Bernedoodle Sizes: Because Bernedoodles are a cross between the Bernese Mountain Dog and a Poodle, size can vary even within the same litter. Genetics, generation (F1, F1b, etc.), and parent sizes all play a role.

Coat Types, Colors & Shedding

One of the most unique features of Bernedoodles is their coat variety.

Coat Types:

✓ Curly (most hypoallergenic)

✓ Wavy (most common)

✓ Straight (more Bernese-like)

Common Colors:

✓ Tricolor (black, white, rust)

✓ Black and white

✓ Merle

✓ Phantom

✓ Sable

Many Bernedoodles are considered low-shedding, especially those with curlier coats, but no dog is truly 100% hypoallergenic.

Are Bernedoodles Hypoallergenic?

Bernedoodles are often described as “hypoallergenic,” but this depends heavily on coat type.

Curly coats → lowest shedding, best for allergy sufferers

Wavy coats → moderate shedding

Straight coats → higher shedding

While they can be a great fit for families with mild allergies, individual reactions will vary.

Exercise & Energy Levels

Bernedoodles have moderate energy levels and typically require at least one long daily walk, playtime or mental stimulation and opportunities to socialize.

They are adaptable and can match the lifestyle of their family, whether that’s active outdoor time or relaxing at home.

Training & Intelligence

Thanks to their Poodle lineage, Bernedoodles are highly intelligent and naturally trainable dogs. They tend to be quick learners, especially when trained using positive reinforcement methods, and they respond best to consistency, structure, and clear expectations. Like many intelligent breeds, they can test boundaries during puppyhood and may show a bit of stubbornness early on, but this typically fades with maturity.

Early training and consistent socialization play a major role in shaping a well-rounded, confident Bernedoodle.

Health & Lifespan

Bernedoodles often benefit from hybrid vigor, which can reduce the likelihood of certain inherited health conditions commonly seen in purebred dogs. Most Bernedoodles have a typical lifespan of around 12 to 18 years, with smaller sizes often living longer than larger ones. While generally healthy, they can still be prone to issues such as hip and elbow dysplasia, allergies, and certain eye conditions.

Choosing a responsible breeder who performs thorough health testing on parent dogs is one of the most important steps in reducing these risks and ensuring a healthy puppy.

Are Bernedoodles Good Family Dogs?

Bernedoodles are widely considered excellent family dogs thanks to their gentle, affectionate nature and strong desire to be around people.

They are typically patient and loving with children, social and friendly with other dogs, and highly intuitive when it comes to human emotions. Their temperament makes them especially well-suited for family life, as they enjoy being involved in daily activities and forming close bonds with their owners. Because of this, they do best in homes where they are not left alone for long periods, as they truly thrive on companionship and connection.

Bernedoodle Pros and Cons

Bernedoodles offer a long list of qualities that make them incredibly appealing companions, including their loving and loyal personalities, high intelligence, and generally low to moderate shedding coats. They are especially well-suited for families with children and adapt well to a variety of living environments. That said, they are not without their challenges. Bernedoodles can develop separation anxiety if left alone too often, and their grooming needs can be more demanding than some owners expect. Their coat types and temperaments can vary from dog to dog, and many go through a stubborn phase as puppies that requires patience and consistent training.

Is a Bernedoodle Right for You?

If you’re looking for a loving, intelligent, and family-oriented dog that thrives on connection and companionship, the Bernedoodle is hard to beat. They fit well into a wide range of households, from active families to individuals looking for a loyal companion.

With the right balance of attention, training, and care, Bernedoodles offer a unique blend of personality, adaptability, and charm that continues to win over dog owners everywhere.
