All About Goldendoodles

Adult Goldendoodle standing indoors showcasing the friendly temperament, intelligence, and low-shedding coat that make Goldendoodles popular family dogs

Goldendoodles are one of the most loved family companion dogs for a reason. A cross between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle, the Goldendoodle is known for being affectionate, intelligent, social, and eager to please. They often bring together the friendly, trustworthy nature of the Golden Retriever with the athleticism, intelligence, and low-shedding coat qualities many families love about Poodles.

What Is a Goldendoodle?

A Goldendoodle is a hybrid dog created by crossing a Golden Retriever with a Poodle. Depending on the size of the Poodle used in the pairing, Goldendoodles can range from smaller companions to larger family dogs. Their coats can also vary from wavy to curly, and their appearance may differ from puppy to puppy, even within the same litter.

Goldendoodles first became especially popular in the 1990s and have continued to grow in popularity because they are often friendly, trainable, affectionate, and well-suited for family life.

Goldendoodle Temperament

Goldendoodles are usually highly social, people-focused dogs who enjoy being part of everyday family life. They are often gentle, affectionate, playful, and eager to learn, which makes them a wonderful fit for many first-time dog owners and families with children.

Because they come from two people-loving breeds, Goldendoodles typically do best in homes where they receive daily attention, training, and interaction. Golden Retrievers are known for being outgoing, trustworthy, and eager to please, while Poodles are intelligent, athletic companions with a low-allergen coat. Those traits are a big part of why many families are drawn to Goldendoodles.

At Doodling All Day, temperament matters just as much as looks. My goal is to raise Goldendoodle puppies who are not only beautiful, but confident, happy, well-rounded, and prepared to make an easy transition into their new homes.

Are Goldendoodles Good Family Dogs?

Goldendoodles are often excellent family dogs because they tend to be friendly, affectionate, and gentle. Many do well with children and other pets when they are raised with proper socialization, structure, and training.

They are not typically a guarding breed. Most Goldendoodles are more likely to greet people with excitement than suspicion, which is part of what makes them such loving companions. Families who want a deeply connected, people-oriented dog often find the Goldendoodle to be a wonderful match.

Goldendoodle Size

Goldendoodles can range in size depending on the Poodle parent used in the breeding. Standard Goldendoodles are usually larger, while Mini Goldendoodles are smaller and may be a better fit for families wanting a more compact dog. Because Goldendoodles are a hybrid breed, size can vary, especially across different generations and pairings.

When choosing a Goldendoodle puppy, it is important to look at the size of the parents, the breeder’s past litters, and the individual puppy’s growth pattern. A good breeder can help guide families toward the puppy who is the best fit for their home, lifestyle, and expectations.

Goldendoodle Coat Types and Shedding

One of the biggest reasons families search for Goldendoodle puppies is their beautiful coat. Goldendoodle coats may be wavy, curly, or occasionally straighter, depending on genetics. Many are low-shedding, but no breeder should promise that every Goldendoodle will be completely non-shedding or hypoallergenic.

Poodles are known for their low-shedding coats, but Goldendoodles can inherit different coat traits from either side of their pedigree. Families with allergies should spend time around Goldendoodles before choosing a puppy whenever possible.

Goldendoodle Grooming Needs

Goldendoodles require regular grooming. Their coats can mat if they are not brushed and maintained, especially around the ears, legs, collar area, and underarms. Dogs with long, silky, or curly coats often need frequent brushing to prevent tangles and mats.

Most Goldendoodle families choose professional grooming every few weeks, along with brushing at home between appointments. Grooming is not just about keeping your puppy cute — it is part of keeping them comfortable, clean, and healthy.

Exercise and Training for Goldendoodles

Goldendoodles are smart dogs who usually enjoy learning. Because both Golden Retrievers and Poodles are active, trainable breeds, Goldendoodles often do best with daily exercise, playtime, and mental enrichment.

They are often a good match for families who want a dog to include in everyday life — walks, playtime in the yard, training games, and family activities. Without enough attention or stimulation, they can become bored, anxious, or destructive.

Goldendoodle Health and Responsible Breeding

Goldendoodles should come from carefully selected, health-tested parents. Ethical breeders screen their breeding dogs to help reduce the risk of inherited health problems and to make informed pairing decisions. The Goldendoodle Association of North America requires health testing for areas such as hips, elbows, heart, patellas, and eyes through OFA certification.

Health testing does not guarantee that a puppy will never have a health issue, but it is one of the most important steps a breeder can take to protect the future of their puppies and the families who love them. OFA’s mission is to promote companion animal health by reducing the incidence of genetic disease.

Are Goldendoodles Easy to Train?

Goldendoodles are often very trainable because they are intelligent and people-oriented. Golden Retrievers are known for being eager to please, and Poodles are known for being highly intelligent, athletic dogs. This combination can make Goldendoodles quick learners when training is consistent, positive, and started early.

Early socialization is also very important. Puppies need positive exposure to normal household sounds, handling, people, surfaces, and age-appropriate challenges so they can grow into confident adult dogs.

Is a Goldendoodle Right for Your Family?

A Goldendoodle may be a great fit if you want a loving, social, intelligent dog who wants to be involved in family life. They are often a wonderful choice for families who are ready for regular grooming, daily interaction, training, and plenty of companionship.

A Goldendoodle may not be the best fit if you want a low-maintenance coat, a dog who can be left alone for long stretches every day, or a natural guard dog. Goldendoodles thrive when they are close to their people and treated like part of the family.
